While a junior in the Creative Writing Program at Columbia University, Fernando Perez was drafted in the seventh round of the Major League Baseball 2004 draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.  He was the 195th pick over all.  Fernando graduated from the Creative Writing Program at Columbia University with a BA in American Studies, a concentration in American Literature.  In college, Fernando wrote short prose forms, poetry and personal essays.  His senior project involved his writing a collection of short poems.  Fernando has enjoying a very successful career in professional baseball.  He was awarded two consecutive Player of the Year Awards – one in 2005 with the Michigan Devil Rays and the second in 2006 with the Visalia Oaks.  In 2008, Fernando played in the Major League Baseball World Series as a Tampa Bay Center Fielder.
